Body Surgery — Complete Guide
Body Lift in Paris
Circumferential belt lipectomy — Price, scarring & recovery
A body lift (circumferential belt lipectomy) is the gold-standard procedure for correcting excess skin all around the lower trunk after massive weight loss. This guide covers everything: technique, price, scarring, recovery, and the difference from a standard tummy tuck.
What is a body lift?
A body lift (or total lower-body lift) is a procedure that tightens the skin all around the lower trunk: abdomen, flanks, buttocks and outer thighs. Unlike a tummy tuck, which only treats the front of the abdomen, a body lift works through 360°.
It is mainly indicated for patients who have lost significant weight — most often after bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass) — and present with circumferential skin laxity that cannot be corrected by a simple tummy tuck alone.
The procedure can be performed in a single operative session or staged across multiple surgical sittings, depending on the degree of excess skin and the patient's general health.
Body lift vs Tummy tuck
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
Treats the front of the abdomen only. Low horizontal scar. For moderate weight loss.
Body lift
Treats abdomen + flanks + buttocks + thighs (360°). Belt-shaped scar. For significant weight loss (30 kg+).
Who is a good candidate for a body lift?
A body lift is indicated for patients who meet the following criteria:
Stable weight
Weight must have been stable for at least 6 to 12 months before surgery. Weight fluctuation after a body lift can compromise results.
Circumferential skin laxity
Excess skin on the abdomen AND the flanks AND the buttocks, often accompanied by ptosis of the outer thighs.
Good general health
A full pre-operative work-up is required. Smoking must be stopped at least 1 month before and 1 month after surgery. Blood sugar, albumin and nutritional status are checked.
After bariatric surgery
A body lift often follows weight-loss surgery. In France, partial public health insurance coverage (via ALD — long-term condition status) may apply if specific Assurance Maladie criteria are met.
How the procedure works
Consultation and planning
Full clinical examination, assessment of areas to treat, and marking of anticipated incision lines. Pre-operative work-up (blood tests, cardiology review if needed, anaesthetist consultation).
General anaesthesia
A body lift is always performed under general anaesthesia. Operative time ranges from 3 to 5 hours depending on the extent of the areas treated.
Resection and lifting
Resection of abdominal excess skin (standard tummy tuck component), followed by repositioning the patient face-down to treat the flanks, buttocks and thighs. The buttocks can be lifted and reshaped during the same procedure.
Hospital stay
2 to 4 nights depending on the extent of the procedure. Drains are placed for 48 to 72 hours. A compression garment is worn for 6 weeks.
Recovery
3 to 4 weeks off work. No sport for 6 to 8 weeks. Follow-up appointments at day 8, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months.
Price and insurance coverage
The cost of a body lift in Paris varies according to the scope of the procedure:
- Full body lift (360°): €10,000 to €15,000
- Partial body lift (abdomen + flanks): €7,000 to €10,000
- Anaesthetist fees: included in the quote
- Hospital fees: included in the quote
Partial reimbursement possible
For patients whose weight loss followed bariatric surgery recognised under France's long-term condition scheme (ALD — Affection de Longue Durée), a partial reimbursement by the French national health insurance (Assurance Maladie / Sécurité Sociale) may be available, provided specific criteria are met: a skin fold exceeding 3 cm, documented weight stability, and a minimum interval since bariatric surgery.
