Exceptions exist: in the context of breast reconstruction after mastectomy (breast cancer), or gender-affirming chest feminisation recognised under ALD 31, full or partial coverage may be available.

Coverage may also be possible in two specific situations: severe breast hypoplasia (A-cup or documented absence of breast development), or significant breast asymmetry with a marked volume difference between the two sides. In such cases, a prior agreement request to the Assurance Maladie can be submitted — please enquire at your consultation.

What is the lifespan of breast implants?+
Modern breast implants are designed to last for many years. There is no obligation to replace them at 10 years if there are no problems. Replacement may be considered in the event of rupture, severe capsular contracture, or if you wish to change the volume. Regular monitoring (clinical examination and imaging) is recommended.
Where are the scars after breast augmentation?+

When can I return to sport after breast augmentation?+

Is breast augmentation painful?+
Post-operative discomfort is moderate and well controlled with oral analgesics (paracetamol, anti-inflammatories). Pain is most noticeable in the first 48 to 72 hours and manifests as a feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest. Discomfort is more pronounced with retropectoral placement, as the pectoral muscle is displaced during the procedure. It decreases significantly after 5 to 7 days.
How is the implant volume chosen?+

What is the difference between retroglandular and retropectoral placement?+
In retroglandular placement (behind the gland, in front of the muscle), recovery is faster and less painful; however, the risk of capsular contracture is slightly higher and the implant may be more visible in slim patients. In retropectoral placement (beneath the pectoral muscle), coverage is better and the result more natural in slim patients, but recovery takes longer. Dr. de Clermont-Tonnerre assesses the most appropriate position for your anatomy at the consultation.
Do breast implants affect mammography results?+
Breast implants make mammography interpretation more complex, as they can obscure part of the glandular tissue. Additional projections (Eklund technique) allow visualisation of the native breast tissue. It is essential to inform the radiologist of the presence of implants. An MRI may be requested for a more comprehensive examination. Imaging surveillance should be maintained according to the standard screening schedule.
At what age can breast augmentation be performed?+
There is no specific legal minimum age for breast augmentation, but it is advisable to wait until breast development is complete, typically around 18–20 years of age. Below 18, surgery is only considered for documented malformations (aplasia, severe asymmetry). There is no maximum age: good general health and a well-considered project remain the only criteria.
Should I stop taking the contraceptive pill before breast augmentation?+
Yes, combined oestrogen-progestogen contraceptive pills should be stopped 1 month before surgery due to the risk of post-operative venous thrombosis. An alternative contraceptive method (condoms, IUD) should be used during this period. Progestogen-only pills carry a lower risk — discuss this with the anaesthetist at the pre-operative assessment. The pill can be restarted 1 month after surgery.
Can breast augmentation and a breast lift (mastopexy) be combined?+
Yes, combined augmentation and breast lift (augmentation mastopexy) is one of the most common breast procedures. It simultaneously addresses insufficient volume and sagging (ptosis). The procedure is performed under a single anaesthetic and is particularly indicated after pregnancy or weight loss that has led to both volume depletion and ptosis. Scarring corresponds to that of a mastopexy (peri-areolar ± vertical).
Is there a cancer risk with breast implants?+
Silicone gel breast implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer. A very rare risk of lymphoma (BIA-ALCL — breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma) was identified with certain macro-textured implants, which were withdrawn from the French market in 2019. Implants currently available — smooth or micro-textured — carry an extremely low BIA-ALCL risk. Regular monitoring by MRI continues to be recommended.
Is a special bra required after surgery?+
Yes, a supportive, underwire-free bra is prescribed immediately after surgery and must be worn 24 hours a day for 4 to 6 weeks, including at night. This bra holds the implants in position, reduces swelling and improves comfort. It is provided or prescribed by the surgeon. After 6 weeks, wearing a sports bra during any physical activity is strongly advised to preserve long-term results.
