Is breast lipofilling painful?+
Pain is moderate and mainly affects the liposuction donor sites (abdomen, thighs or flanks). It is effectively managed with oral pain relievers during the first few days. The breasts themselves are generally not very painful.
How long does breast lipofilling take?+
The procedure takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours depending on the volumes to be harvested and re-injected, and the number of donor areas treated.
What is the difference compared to breast implants?+
Lipofilling allows for a more modest volume gain (generally +1 cup size) but provides a completely natural feel with no foreign body. Unlike implants, it does not require specific radiological monitoring and also benefits from simultaneous liposuction.
Is the result permanent?+
Approximately 60 to 80% of the injected fat is permanent after 6 months. The resorbed portion (20 to 40%) gradually disappears during the first 3 months. Weight fluctuations influence the result: weight gain increases breast volume, weight loss may reduce it.
How much volume can be gained with breast lipofilling?+
Breast lipofilling generally achieves a gain of approximately 0.5 to 1 cup size. This result is more modest than that obtained with implants, but has the advantage of a completely natural look and feel. Lipofilling is therefore particularly indicated for patients wishing a discreet and harmonious improvement without a foreign body.
Do I need to gain weight before lipofilling?+
It is not necessary to gain weight specifically before the procedure, but a minimum of available adipose tissue in the donor areas (abdomen, thighs, flanks) is essential. Very slim patients with insufficient fat reserves may not be candidates for breast lipofilling. Feasibility is assessed during the pre-operative consultation.
Do the donor areas heal well?+
The liposuction performed during lipofilling uses micro-incisions of about 3 mm, made in discreet areas (natural folds, hidden areas). These entry points leave virtually invisible scars after a few months. Additionally, the donor areas benefit from body contouring, which is an added advantage of this technique.
Can lipofilling be combined with a breast lift?+
Yes, combining lipofilling with a breast lift (mastopexy) is common and is called composite augmentation. It is particularly indicated in patients with ptosis (sagging) combined with insufficient volume, especially after pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight loss. This combination corrects both shape and volume in a single procedure.
What are the contraindications to lipofilling?+
Several situations may contraindicate breast lipofilling: a very low body mass index with insufficient fat reserves in donor areas; a history of breast cancer requiring prior agreement from the breast surgeon or oncologist; certain coagulation disorders or anticoagulant treatments; and unrealistic expectations regarding the volume obtained.
Is mammography affected after lipofilling?+
Lipofilling may result in small oil cysts or areas of fat necrosis visible on breast imaging. These images, although benign, may be mistaken for suspicious lesions by an uninformed radiologist. It is therefore essential to mention your history of lipofilling at each radiological examination. Annual breast monitoring remains recommended as for all patients.
When is the final result of breast lipofilling visible?+
The final result is visible from 6 months after the procedure, once the physiological fat resorption has stabilised. In the first few weeks, post-operative swelling gives an impression of volume greater than the final result. This swelling gradually resolves over 2 to 3 weeks. The definitive, stable and natural shape is reached between 3 and 6 months post-operatively.
Is breast lipofilling covered by health insurance?+
In the vast majority of cases, aesthetic breast lipofilling is not reimbursed by health insurance and remains entirely at the patient's expense. However, exceptions exist: as part of breast reconstruction after breast cancer (post-mastectomy or post-lumpectomy), lipofilling may be covered. Additionally, in cases of severe breast asymmetry with significant functional or psychological impact, partial coverage may be considered under certain conditions.
